How does a Claude Code usage reset work?
Claude Code used with a Claude subscription draws from usage shared with the same Claude account. If an eligible reset offer appears, redeem it in Settings → Usage on the Claude website or in Claude Desktop. The redemption control is not currently in the Claude Code terminal or IDE, but Anthropic says the restored account usage also becomes available in Claude Code.
An offer restores one limit: either the five-hour session allowance or the weekly allowance shown for that offer. It does not change the weekly schedule. You can use an eligible reset before reaching a limit; once used, it cannot be undone. Any expiry appears with the offer in Usage, so read it before you confirm.
Does Claude Code’s /reset command restore a usage limit?
No. Anthropic’s current Claude Code cheatsheet describes /reset as an alias of /clear and /new: it clears conversation history so you can begin another session. It does not restore a five-hour or weekly plan allowance.
Use /usage when you want to see plan limits and current rate-limit status in the CLI. That command reports usage; it does not redeem the account-level offer. The built-in command list documents no terminal command for applying a “Reset for free” offer, so use the web or Desktop route shown in Anthropic’s reset instructions.
How is a full Codex reset different?
OpenAI’s banked-reset guide describes a full saved reset as refreshing both the five-hour and weekly Codex usage windows. It also changes the account’s next weekly reset date. The reset is saved on an eligible account until it is applied or expires; it is not a permanent increase to plan usage.
That is a different rule from Anthropic’s optional Claude offer. Anthropic says an offer restores either the session limit or weekly limit, while the weekly schedule stays on its usual day and time. Do not assume that the word “full” or a reset button means the same windows will move across both providers. Confirm the offer text and then read the signed-in Usage page.
A safe check when Claude Code says you are out of usage
- Identify the sign-in route. If you use Claude Pro or Max, confirm Claude Code is authenticated to that same subscription account. Anthropic says its subscription allowance is shared across Claude and Claude Code.
- Check for API-key authentication. An
ANTHROPIC_API_KEYenvironment variable can make Claude Code use API billing instead of the subscription allowance. A subscription reset offer does not turn API usage into subscription usage. Check the active credential route before waiting for a plan timer. - Read the CLI status. Run
/usageto see the plan usage and current rate-limit status. Use/resetonly when you want a fresh conversation, not more allowance. - Open Claude Settings → Usage. Check the account, whether a reset offer is available, which limit it names, and its expiry. The offer restores only what it says it will.
- Confirm, then recheck. After applying the reset, return to the same account’s Usage view. Anthropic says the restored usage is shared with Claude Code; it does not promise a different weekly reset schedule.

Common Claude Code reset questions
Can I use the “Reset for free” button inside the terminal?
Anthropic currently directs users to Claude on the web or Claude Desktop. The button is not currently available in Claude Code in the terminal or IDE. After redemption, shared subscription usage is available in Claude Code.
Does the offer reset all Claude usage?
Check the offer label. Anthropic says it restores either the five-hour session limit or weekly usage limit. The offer does not move the usual weekly reset schedule.
Does /reset reset the Claude Code quota?
No. It starts a fresh conversation by clearing conversation history. Use /usage to check status and Settings → Usage to redeem an account-level reset offer.
Will Claude Code reset when I use a Codex reset?
No. The providers have separate accounts and allowance rules. A Codex banked reset affects eligible Codex usage; a Claude offer affects the Claude account usage named in that offer.
Why is a reset offer missing from my terminal?
That is expected: Anthropic’s help says the control is currently in web Claude or Claude Desktop rather than the terminal or IDE. Also check that you are signed in to the right account and that the offer has not expired.
